Taxonomies for learning

Taxonomy of self-directed learning:

1. Diagnose a learning need

  • What do I ultimately want to achieve?

2. Formulate a plan

  • Where, what and who is going to get me there?

  • What avenues are available to me?

  • Which option will I take?

3. Identify resources

  • Which social settings and who will support my learning?

  • What resources are available?

  • Are the resources I need accessible to me?

4. Choose and implement strategies

  • How will I sustain my interest and motivation in the task?

  • What learning strategies are available?

  • What learning strategies will work best for me?

5. Evaluate outcomes

  • Did I achieve what I initially wanted to achieve?

  • What worked and what did not work?

  • What would I do differently next time?

Taxonomy of self-efficacy:

1. Reflect

  • How do I embody success?

  • What are my strengths?

2. Mastery experiences

  • Performing a task successfully strengthens our sense of self-efficacy.

3. Social modelling

  • Witnessing other people successfully completing a task is another important source of self-efficacy.

4. Psychological responses

  • Our own responses and emoitonal reactions to situations play an important role in self-efficacy.

5. Social persuasion

  • People can be persuaded to believe that they have the skills and capabilities to succeed - positive reinforcement and encouragement.

Taxonomy of reflection:

1. Remembering and Understanding: What did I do? What was important about the information and task?

  • Retrieving, recognising and recalling information. Constructing meaning from oral, written, or graphic messages.

2. Applying: Where could I use this again?

  • Carrying out or using a procedure through executing, or implementing. Extending the procedure in a new setting.

3. Analysing: Do I see any patterns/relationships in what I did?

  • Breaking material into constituent parts, determining how the parts relate to one another and to an overall structure or purpose.

4. Evaluating: How well did I do?

  • How well did I do, what worked/didn't work, what do I need to do to improve?

5. Creating: What should I do next?

  • Combining or reorganising elements into a new pattern or structure.

  • What can I apply this to in the future? Drawing connections between different contexts.

  • What can I do to improve the outcome next time?

Taxonomy of planning my PLN:

  1. Research and explore other PLN’s for ideas and inspiration.

  2. How and what program will I use to make my PLN?

  3. What information will I include?How will this information and my PLN as whole reflect me?

  4. Connect with other PLN's associated with my profession. Invite people to my PLN.

  5. Continue to evaluate and develop my PLN further.
